Dr. Kevin Kuehn is a Professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, specializing in microbial ecology and biogeochemical cycling in aquatic ecosystems. His research examines fungal-mediated decomposition processes in freshwater and estuarine environments, with particular focus on organic matter processing dynamics.
He holds a PhD in Biology (Ecology) from the University of Alabama (1997), MS in Biology from Texas State University (1987), and BS in Aquatic Biology from Texas State University (1985).
Kuehn's research investigates quantitative impacts of fungal organisms on ecosystem-scale biogeochemical cycles. Key interests include:
- Fungal roles in detrital processing
- Organic matter-nutrient interactions
- Microbial community dynamics
- Wetland ecosystem functioning
His recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on decomposition mechanisms across riverine and wetland systems, with emerging themes in climate change impacts, anthropogenic disturbances, and restoration ecology. Notable methodological advancements include techniques for measuring wetland carbon fluxes and cellulose decomposition.
Dr. Kuehn teaches courses including Principles of Biological Sciences, Introductory Ecology, Microbial Ecology, Introductory Mycology, and Limnology.
