Byron Crump is a Professor and Program Head for Oceanography at Oregon State University’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. His research focuses on aquatic microbial ecology in marine, estuarine, and freshwater ecosystems, emphasizing bacterial and archaeal biogeography, nutrient cycling, and microbial community dynamics. He leads the Crump Laboratory, which integrates molecular techniques and interdisciplinary collaborations to study watershed-scale ecological processes.
Education:
- Ph.D., Biological Oceanography, University of Washington (1999)
- M.S., Biological Oceanography, University of Washington (1996)
- B.A., Biology, Oberlin College (1990)
Key research areas include microbial responses to environmental gradients, Arctic ecosystem dynamics (e.g., Toolik Lake LTER), and the role of microbial communities in estuaries and rivers. His work bridges molecular ecology with ecosystem science, addressing topics like climate change impacts, hydrologic function, and microbial-driven biogeochemical cycles. Recent studies explore riverine dissolved organic matter transformations, microbial community storm dynamics, and genomic cataloging of North American watersheds.
Grants & Collaborations: Active in Arctic LTER projects and collaborations with CMOP on the Columbia River. His lab emphasizes interdisciplinary teamwork and public engagement, including K-12 education initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Crump Laboratory focuses on microbial ecology, combining fieldwork, molecular analyses, and computational modeling to understand microbial roles in global ecosystems.
