Professor Kevin Homewood is a Visiting Professor at the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI), University of Surrey. He holds a BSc and PhD from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). His research focuses on semiconductor optoelectronics, silicon-based light emission, and nanomaterials engineering. He leads a research group and has pioneered dislocation-engineered silicon light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and optical gain materials. Key achievements include a £2M ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (SILAMPS) for silicon laser development and co-founding SiLight Technology Ltd.
Research interests include semiconductor materials, rare-earth-doped silicon, and ion implantation techniques. Notable contributions include groundbreaking work on silicon optoelectronics, including photoluminescence in doped silicon and novel approaches to silicon-based lasers. He has authored over 180 papers, including high-impact publications in Nature and Applied Physics Letters.
