معرفی
Dr. Kevin Fitzsimmons is a Professor in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona. He has established himself as a leading expert in aquaculture, particularly in tilapia farming and aquaponic systems, with an extensive publication record spanning over three decades. His work bridges scientific research with practical applications for sustainable food production systems globally.
- Teaches multiple courses including Aquatic Plants & Environment, Freshwater & Marine Algae, and various research/internship courses
- Active researcher with publications in top aquaculture journals
- International collaborator with projects spanning multiple continents
- Supervisor of numerous graduate students and research projects
Dr. Fitzsimmons' research interests focus on sustainable aquaculture practices, with particular emphasis on integrated fish-plant systems (aquaponics), tilapia biology and farming, water quality management, and sustainable food production. His work explores how aquaculture can be made more environmentally friendly while maintaining economic viability, with significant contributions to understanding nutrient cycling in recirculating systems, fish nutrition, and the development of sustainable aquaculture practices for developing regions.
His recent scholarly output demonstrates a clear trend toward systems-level approaches to aquaculture sustainability. While maintaining his foundational work on tilapia biology and aquaponic systems, his publications increasingly address governance frameworks, socioeconomic dimensions, and global sustainability metrics for aquaculture. This evolution reflects the growing recognition that technical aquaculture solutions must be integrated with sound policy, economic models, and social considerations to achieve truly sustainable food systems. His work on aquaponics in Sub-Saharan Africa represents an important bridge between technological innovation and practical implementation in resource-limited settings.
- Biosphere 2 Fellow, University of Arizona (2023)
- Fellow of the World Aquaculture Society (2022)
- Fulbright Research Fellowship (2017)
- Excellence in Global Education Award (2016)
- President of World Aquaculture Society (2004)
- Certified Fisheries Scientist, American Fisheries Society (1988)
Dr. Fitzsimmons has mentored numerous graduate students who have gone on to become researchers and practitioners in aquaculture worldwide. His research has been supported by various grants including USAID, American Soybean Association, USDA FAS, and Fulbright-USAID programs. These projects have focused on practical applications of aquaculture technologies in diverse settings from the United States to Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. His collaborative approach is evident in the wide range of co-authors from different countries and disciplines across his publication record.
His laboratory work focuses on aquaponic systems, tilapia nutrition and physiology, and water quality management. He has been involved with the Biosphere 2 facility for research on closed ecological systems, particularly examining nutrient cycling and plant-fish interactions. His team regularly conducts both controlled laboratory experiments and field studies to validate findings under practical farming conditions, with particular attention to systems that can be implemented in resource-limited settings.
