Kevin Cahill is a Senior Lecturer in Education at the School of Education, University College Cork (UCC). He serves as Co-Director of the Postgraduate Diploma in Special Educational Needs (PDSEN) and teaches across various programs with a focus on Inclusive/Special Education, Pedagogy (English), and Sociology of Education. With extensive experience in both higher education and second-level teaching, Cahill brings practical insights to his academic work.
Dr. Cahill completed his PhD at University College Cork in 2012, titled "What Class are you in? A Critical Ethnography of School Choice, Social Class and Student Identity in an Irish Urban Post-Primary School." He also holds an M.Ed. (2005), Higher Diploma in Learning Support (2003), PGDipEd (1997), and BA in English and History (1996), all from University College Cork.
Kevin Cahill's research centers on educational inequality, inclusive education, and the intersection of social class with schooling experiences. His work explores how school choice mechanisms impact marginalized student populations and how teacher education can better prepare educators for inclusive practices. He has developed particular expertise in understanding the relationship between literacy, identity, and educational outcomes, especially for students with special educational needs. His research often employs qualitative methodologies to examine the lived experiences of students, teachers, and parents within the Irish educational context.
Cahill's scholarly contributions demonstrate a consistent focus on making education more equitable and inclusive.
