Maria Cahill's research centers on constitutional theory, legal theory, and comparative law, with a particular focus on subsidiarity, freedom of association, pluralism, sovereignty, and constitutional architecture. She investigates how constitutional principles interact with European integration, fundamental rights, and democratic legitimacy. Her work often bridges historical, philosophical, and doctrinal perspectives, analyzing issues such as constitutional amendability, constituent power, and the reception of European law in national systems. She is deeply engaged in the scholarship of teaching and learning, particularly through innovative pedagogical methods like inverted learning.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent trajectory in exploring the philosophical and legal dimensions of subsidiarity and sovereignty, especially in European and Irish constitutional contexts. She has also contributed significantly to debates on freedom of thought, human rights adjudication, and the role of national constituent power within supranational frameworks. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates political theory, legal history, and constitutional jurisprudence.
