Kevin A. Fellezs is an Associate Professor of Music/Ethnomusicology at Columbia University. His research explores intersections between social dynamics and musical aesthetics, focusing on fusion music, Hawaiian slack key guitar, and heavy metal. He has published extensively in journals like American Music and Metal Music Studies, and served as Senior Editor for the Grove Dictionary of Music (2nd Edition).
- Education: B.A. in Music (Jazz Studies, 1998), M.A. in Humanities (2000) from San Francisco State University; PhD in History of Consciousness (2004) from UC Santa Cruz.
His scholarship examines race, gender, and cultural identity in musical contexts. Key projects include analyzing anthropogenic ocean sounds and their ecological impact. His work bridges jazz, metal, and indigenous Hawaiian studies with critical race theory.
Scientific awards include the 2012 Woody Guthrie Book Award and a 2021 Native American and Indigenous Studies Association Honorable Mention. He has held prestigious fellowships, including the UC President's Postdoctoral Fellowship (2004-06) and Waseda University's Tsunoda Senior Fellowship (2015-16).
