Kerry Madden-Lunsford

Kerry Madden-Lunsford is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), part of the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds an MFA and B.A. from the University of Tennessee. Her work spans creative nonfiction, literary fiction, and writing for young audiences, with notable collaborations in interdisciplinary projects involving art, theater, and public health advocacy.

Her research interests include transgender rights, historical narratives (e.g., Bronte Parsonage, Vulcan history), and social issues like addiction and suicide prevention. Madden-Lunsford has authored eight books, including the acclaimed Ernestine’s Milky Way (2019) and Werewolf Hamlet (2022). She received the 2021 Dean’s Excellence in Mentorship Award and an Alabama State Arts Council Grant (2022).

Her teaching philosophy emphasizes creative risk-taking and revision, integrating workshops with visiting professionals. Collaborations include projects with UAB’s Art & Art History, Theatre, and Public Health departments. She balances roles in academia and creative writing, dividing her time between Birmingham and Los Angeles.
