Kerro Knox serves as Professor of Theatre and Associate Director at Oakland University's School of Music, Theatre and Dance, teaching lighting design and theatre history while actively designing productions including Macbeth, The Who’s Tommy, and operas such as Street Scene. His professional work extends to dance companies like Eisenhower Dance Detroit and theatre venues nationwide.
He earned a BA in American Studies from Yale College and an MFA in Technical Design and Production from the Yale School of Drama under renowned designers Jennifer Tipton and Ming Cho Lee.
His creative research spans:
- Theatrical design disciplines (lighting, scenic, costume) for theatre, dance, and opera
- Theatre history and directing with emphasis on children's adaptations from African folklore
- Performance and instrumentation in African Drum/Xylophone and Steel Band traditions
Knox co-directs Oakland’s African Drum and Xylophone Ensemble and Steel Band, performs internationally, and previously taught at Syracuse University and Stephen F. Austin State University while serving as Co-Chair of Region III for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
