Keri Shafer

Keri Shafer, M.D. serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and is a member of the Division of Cardiology. She directs the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program, specializing in adult congenital heart disease management with clinical expertise in exercise/sports participation, echocardiography, aortopathies (including Marfan syndrome), and pregnancy-related cardiac care.

Her educational background includes:

• Bachelor's degree in Animal Science from Texas Tech University
• Medical degree from the University of New Mexico
• Internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
• Adult cardiovascular disease fellowship at UT Southwestern
• Research fellowship in exercise physiology at UT Southwestern's Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine
• Specialized fellowship in adult congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension at Boston Children's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital

Dr. Shafer's research centers on exercise physiology in adult congenital heart disease patients, investigating safe physical activity thresholds and sports participation guidelines. She concurrently advances medical education through scholarly work published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national cardiology conferences including the American College of Cardiology. Her clinical research directly informs patient management protocols in high-risk scenarios like pregnancy and connective tissue disorders.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular disease and adult congenital heart disease, she joined UT Southwestern's faculty in 2024. Dr. Shafer leads the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program's multidisciplinary clinical team and maintains active memberships in the Adult Congenital Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and American Heart Association.
