Dr. Kent Wayland serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering and Society at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on interdisciplinary Science & Technology Studies (STS), including data ethics, surveillance systems, and community engagement practices. He teaches courses on engineering ethics and intercultural learning, and directs a study abroad program in Guatemala.
Education: B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Vanderbilt University (1992), Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from University of Virginia (2006), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at UVA (2007-2010).
Research interests span intercultural education, Guatemala’s sociocultural history, ethics of community engagement, and data accountability systems. Notable work examines transparency in campaign finance and digital surveillance practices of tech giants like Google and Facebook.
Recent publications highlight interdisciplinary education strategies and the ethical implications of data collection by tech corporations. His work bridges STS theory with practical applications in engineering education and global development.
Teaching responsibilities include STS 4500 (STS and Engineering Practice) and STS 4600 (Engineering Ethics). His courses emphasize ethical decision-making and global competency.
