Kenneth W. Sims

Dr. Kenneth W. Sims is a Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming. His research focuses on isotope geochemistry, volcanology, and magmatic processes, with a particular emphasis on using U-series disequilibria and radiogenic isotopes to investigate Earth and planetary processes. He has conducted fieldwork globally, including in Antarctica, Nicaragua, Congo, and Hawaii, and has led expeditions to volcanoes like Masaya and Nyiragongo. His educational background includes a B.A. from Colorado College, an M.Sc. from the University of New Mexico, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Research interests include the evolution of volcanic systems, magma genesis and degassing, and isotopic dating of igneous and sedimentary rocks. He teaches courses such as Isotope Geology and Volcanology. Sims has received funding from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and National Geographic, with grants totaling over $2 million. His work has been featured in National Geographic, New Scientist, and Oceanus, and he collaborates with media to communicate science to the public.

Current graduate students include Caroline Lo Re’ Brewer, Sean Scott, and Erin Phillips-Writer. Notable expeditions include climbing and scientific missions in the Andes, Alaska, and Antarctica. His outreach includes lectures for schools and senior groups, and he mentors students in fieldwork and public engagement.
