Kenneth Overly is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department at Providence College. With a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Virginia (1992) and a B.S. in Chemistry from Kent State University (1984), he has focused his academic career on organic synthesis, catalysis, and chemical education.
- Ph.D., University of Virginia (1992): Synthesis of the C1-C13 Polyacetate Region of Amphotericin B
- B.S., Kent State University (1984)
His research spans organic synthesis, catalysis, and chemical education, with notable work on chiral ketone and iminium salt catalysts for olefin epoxidation, as well as the development of innovative organic chemistry laboratory experiments. His scholarly contributions include studies on manganese tricarbonyl complexes, hydrodesulfurization mechanisms, and carbohydrate degradation pathways.
Overly has secured multiple grants from the Committee on Aid to Faculty Research, including projects in 2013, 2011, and 2008-2009, often collaborating with J. Pike on curriculum development. Though no formal awards or students are listed, his work demonstrates a commitment to advancing chemical research and pedagogy.
