Prof. Franca Bigi is a Full Professor at the Department of Chemical, Life and Environmental Sustainability Sciences of the University of Parma. Her career spans over four decades at the same institution, transitioning from Researcher (1983-1992), Associate Professor (1992-2004), to Full Professor since 2004. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, 5 book chapters, and 8 patents.
- Research Focus: Organic chemistry with emphasis on heterogeneous catalysis, green chemistry, and nanomaterial applications.
- Key Contributions: Development of solvent-free and eco-friendly synthetic methods, replacement of toxic reagents in chemical processes, and design of nanosystems for biomedical applications.
- Teaching: Delivers Organic Chemistry II, Higher Organic Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry for Biotechnology courses at both Bachelor's and Master's levels.
Recent Work Trends: Analysis of publications (2021-2025) reveals a strong focus on
- Visible-light-driven chemical transformations
- Green synthesis of metal nanoparticles
- Biomedical applications of nanotechnology
- Enantioselective catalytic systems
- Development of solventless reaction mechanisms
- Integration of all-metal aromatic clusters in catalysis
Advancing Research: Her group has pioneered the use of silica-supported chiral catalysts for asymmetric epoxidation, and heterogeneous systems for oxidation reactions using environmentally benign oxidants like hydrogen peroxide.
