Kenneth A. Dodge is the William McDougall Distinguished Professor of Public Policy Studies at Duke University, with joint appointments in Psychology and Neuroscience. He has been a faculty member at the Sanford School of Public Policy since 1998 and is a founding director of the Center for Child and Family Policy and founder of Family Connects International.
Dr. Dodge holds a B.A. in Psychology from Northwestern University (1975) and a Ph.D. in Psychology from Duke University (1978). His research focuses on the development and prevention of aggressive and violent behaviors in children, with a particular emphasis on population health interventions like the Family Connects program. This initiative, piloted in Durham, NC, aims to support families of newborns through early detection and community resource allocation, reducing maternal mental health issues and child maltreatment.
His work spans cross-cultural studies on child development, including projects in 9 nations examining adolescent behavior, mental health, and family dynamics. Key areas include the impact of parenting practices, cultural norms, and policy interventions on child welfare.
Dr. Dodge’s awards reflect his leadership in prevention science and policy, including National Academy of Medicine membership (2015) and the J.P. Scott Award for Lifetime Contribution to Aggression Research.
Current projects include the Durham Navigation Study, Great Smoky Mountains Study of Rural Aging, and investigations into the fadeout of early childhood intervention impacts. His research emphasizes scalable solutions to reduce disparities in child development outcomes.
