Kennan Ferguson is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). His work bridges political theory with critical race studies, indigenous sovereignty, and posthumanist thought. He holds a PhD from the University of Hawai'i and a BA from Amherst College, where he graduated magna cum laude in Political Science and Philosophy.
Research interests include radical reimaginings of political frameworks beyond anthropocentrism, settler colonialism critique, and the intersections of indigenous thought with continental philosophy. His publications challenge conventional boundaries of political agency, exploring non-human politics, Afro-pessimism, and the materiality of freedom.
Ferguson teaches courses on classical and modern political thought, environmental political theory, and Native American political theory. Notable works include The Big No (2022), Cookbook Politics (2020), and All in the Family: On Community and Incommensurability (2012). His scholarship frequently engages with William James, Deleuze, and Derrida, while addressing contemporary issues like anti-Blackness and ecological governance.
He has contributed to over 40 peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes, including entries in the 8-volume Encyclopedia of Political Thought (2014). His work is characterized by interdisciplinary rigor and a commitment to decolonizing political discourse.
