Leonard Lawlor is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Philosophy at Pennsylvania State University, located in the Department of Philosophy. His work focuses on 19th and 20th century Continental Philosophy, with particular emphasis on Bergson, Deleuze, Foucault, and Derrida. He has authored influential books such as From Violence to Speaking Out (2016) and Early Twentieth Century Continental Philosophy (2011), and co-edited volumes like Between Philosophy and Non-Philosophy (2016) and The Cambridge Foucault Lexicon (2014). His research explores themes of immanence, postmodernism, animal ethics, and the ethics of philosophical activity.
Education: B.A. in Philosophy from Eastern Michigan University (1978), M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from SUNY Stony Brook (1982, 1988). He has taught advanced seminars on Bergson, Deconstruction, and 20th-century continental thought. Lawlor’s recent projects include a book on Deleuze’s 1960s works and co-hosting a podcast series Murmurs before Arrival discussing immanence and animal life. His work bridges philosophical analysis with ethical and political concerns, emphasizing the role of creativity in postmodern thought.
