Kendall R. Lamkey is a Professor of Agronomy and the Associate Dean for Facilities and Operations at Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He previously served as Chair of the Department of Agronomy (2007–2023) and Interim Chair (2006). With degrees from the University of Illinois (B.S., M.S.) and Iowa State University (Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics), his research focuses on corn breeding, quantitative genetics, and cropping systems modeling. He has authored/co-authored over 80 journal articles and advised 18 Ph.D. and 10 M.S. students.
His work includes genetic gain analysis in maize, plant breeding education in Sub-Saharan Africa (e.g., Makerere University's MaRCCI), and collaborations with the Gates-funded Plant Breeding Education for Africa (PBEA) program. Key research interests include maize yield components, inbreeding depression, heterosis, and integrating genetic changes into models like APSIM.
Dr. Lamkey has contributed to editorial roles at Crop Science and holds fellowships from the American Society of Agronomy and Crop Science Society of America. His leadership spans academic administration, facility management, and interdisciplinary initiatives in sustainable agriculture and bioenergy systems.
