Prof. Ken Storey is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Carleton University, Faculty of Science. His research focuses on biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic rate depression in organisms surviving extreme environmental stresses such as freezing, anoxia, and dehydration. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia (UBC). His work explores reversible phosphorylation, transcription factor networks, and epigenetic controls in hypometabolic states, with applications to human therapeutics like organ preservation.
Research Themes: Metabolic regulation, epigenetics, hibernation, cryobiology, anoxia survival, and comparative physiology. Model systems include hibernating mammals, freeze-tolerant amphibians, and anoxia-tolerant turtles. Techniques used include proteomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics.
Prof. Storey actively mentors students at all levels (undergraduate, MSc, PhD) and leads the Storey Lab at Carleton University. His lab investigates the intersection of environmental stress and cellular survival strategies, publishing widely in high-impact journals. Collaborations span global institutions, emphasizing translational research for medical applications.
