Dr. Ken Otter is Professor and Chair of Ecosystem Science and Management at the University of Northern British Columbia. His primary research investigates how forest birds respond to anthropogenic disturbances, examining behavioral adaptations, communication patterns, and breeding ecology in contexts ranging from forest harvesting to urbanization. With extensive experience in avian ecology, he leads the Avian Behaviour & Conservation Research Lab ('The Bird Cave'), supervising graduate students in Biology and Natural Resources & Environmental Studies programs.
Key research interests encompass avian communication networks, disturbance ecology, urban-wildlife interfaces, and conservation strategies. His work employs innovative technologies like autonomous recording units and RFID tracking to study bird movement and behavior. Current projects include collaborative studies on mountain chickadee ecology along urban-rural gradients and song evolution in white-throated sparrows.
Recent publications demonstrate strong interdisciplinary focus, combining field biology with bioacoustic monitoring, genetic analysis, and conservation applications. Research consistently examines how human-altered landscapes influence avian behavior, physiology, and evolutionary trajectories. Notable trends include investigations of urban adaptation mechanisms, cultural transmission of vocalizations, and biodiversity conservation in managed forests.
Dr. Otter mentors numerous graduate students and research associates, maintaining collaborations across North America and Europe. His laboratory develops methodologies for tracking avian movement patterns and analyzing complex bioacoustic data, contributing to wildlife management and conservation practices.
