Ken Hirschkop is a Professor at the University of Waterloo, specializing in cultural theory, literary criticism, and language philosophy. He holds a DPhil from Oxford, MA from London, and BA from Swarthmore. His career includes roles at the University of Southampton (1987-1995) and University of Manchester (1995-2005). He has received notable grants including SSHRC (2009-2012) and Leverhulme Fellowship (2000).
Research interests focus on Mikhail Bakhtin, linguistic theory, media studies, and populism's cultural dimensions. Current projects explore critiques of language-as-code theories and the intersection of mass media with populist politics. He co-founded the International Conference on Games and Narrative through the Games Institute.
Awards include SSHRC grants and Leverhulme Fellowships. His teaching emphasizes cultural theory, Marxist thought, and critical media studies. He actively supervises graduate work in Bakhtinian theory, media studies, and urban culture.
