Peter Ives

Peter Ives is a Professor and Chair of Cultural Studies at the University of Winnipeg, serving as Graduate Chair for the M.A. in Cultural Studies Programme (2024-26). Previously, he taught at Simon Fraser University and the University of Manitoba, establishing a career bridging political theory and linguistic analysis.

His educational background includes a B.A. in Political Science from Reed College (1991), followed by M.A. (1993) and Ph.D. (1998) in Social & Political Thought from York University. His doctoral work laid the foundation for his lifelong engagement with Gramscian theory and language politics.

Ives' research centers on Political Theory, Marxism, and Critical Theory, with specialized focus on the politics of 'global English,' freedom of expression, and intersections between language policy and democratic theory. His work consistently applies Gramscian frameworks to contemporary issues of linguistic hegemony, globalization, and neoliberalism, while maintaining strong connections to feminist and postcolonial perspectives.
