Kelly Mackinnon is an Associate Professor in the Architecture and Built Environment Department at Northumbria University, and Co-Director of Cultural Partnerships. She has over 20 years of experience in academia and industry collaboration, focusing on design, cultural heritage, adaptive reuse, and youth engagement in architecture. Her roles include advisory positions with the Architects Registration Board, English Heritage, and local authorities. She holds a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and has taught at institutions like Strathclyde University and the Glasgow School of Art.
Education qualifications include a BArch (1997), PGDip in Architecture (2001), and SFHEA (2018). She has served as an external examiner at multiple universities, including the University of Kent and Strathclyde. Her research explores the intersection of architecture with community participation, sustainability, and education.
Research interests emphasize collaborative practice, cultural heritage preservation, and amplifying youth voices in built environment decisions. Notable projects include the Venice Biennale Fellowship Scheme and partnerships with institutions like the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
