معرفی
Kelly MacFarlane is a Full Teaching Professor in the Department of History, Classics, & Religion at the University of Alberta. She earned her PhD (2002), MA, and BA from the same institution. Her primary focus is teaching, with expertise in Classics and innovative Latin pedagogy. She developed interactive Latin courses prioritizing communication over traditional grammar-translation methods and co-created a course on scientific terminology rooted in Greek and Latin. Her research includes later Greek epic poetry, ancient language education, and the influence of Classics on scientific vocabulary.
She previously taught at Mt. Allison University, Western University, and Southern Illinois University as part of temporary academic staff before returning to the University of Alberta. Active in outreach, she contributed to the Classics at the U-School program, engaging under-resourced students through workshops on ancient culture. She also volunteers with SAFE Team Rescue, a local cat rescue organization.
Her scholarly work includes presentations such as 'The (Latin) Cases: A Bridge Between Active Latin and Grammar-Translation' (2023) and discussions on classical influences in medical terminology. Though she does not supervise graduate students, she contributes to advisory committees for MA/PhD students. She is affiliated with the Brill Research Perspectives series on Classical Poetry, focusing on later Greek epic.
