Dr. Kelly Gorkoff serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice within the Faculty of Arts at The University of Winnipeg, where she has shaped critical criminology scholarship since 2006. Her work bridges theoretical critique with policy analysis across criminal justice institutions.
Her academic credentials include:
- MA in Sociology, University of Manitoba
- PhD in Sociology and Anthropology, Carleton University (dissertation: corporatization of post-secondary education)
Dr. Gorkoff's research program centers on critical political economy and feminist theory applications to criminal justice systems. She investigates regulatory practices in family violence, sex work, and therapeutic justice mechanisms while examining governance structures and social determinants of crime. Her work consistently challenges conventional policy approaches through community mobilization frameworks.
Recent publications reveal intensifying focus on therapeutic justice institutions, particularly drug treatment courts, with critical analysis of corporatization trends and demographic disparities in access. Her scholarship spans empirical studies (notably with Weinrath on court outcomes) and theoretical syntheses like the 2020 textbook Introduction to Criminal Justice.
Dr. Gorkoff actively supervises Criminal Justice Honours and Master's theses while securing major research funding from:
- Status of Women Canada
- Department of Justice Canada
- Manitoba Law Foundation
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
- Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
She maintains significant research network affiliations including RESOLVE's Steering Committee, Centre for Interdisciplinary Justice Studies (as co-editor of its Annual Review), Center for Access to Information and Justice (CAIJ), and the Canadian Sociological Association's Social Theory Research Cluster.
