Kelly Drew is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She directs the NIH-funded Center for Transformative Research in Metabolism, a Center of Excellence in Hibernation Science, focusing on neuroprotective mechanisms in hibernators and their translation to neurocritical care. Her work bridges biochemistry, neuroscience, and physiology.
- B.S., Psychology (1981), University of Alaska Fairbanks
- Ph.D., Pharmacology (1987), Albany Medical College
- Post-doctoral Fellow, Pharmacology, Karolinska Institute (1987-1990)
Research interests center on:
- Intrinsic neuroprotective properties of Arctic ground squirrel brains
- Synaptic remodeling during hibernation torpor and arousal
- Central nervous system regulation of metabolic suppression
- Therapeutic hypothermia applications
- Ischemia tolerance mechanisms
Her publications highlight translational potential from hibernation biology to human critical care, particularly through adenosine receptor agonists. Scientific awards include the Dennis Demmert Award (2005), Usebelli Teaching Award (2006), and Sven O.E. Ebbesson Neuroscience Award (2006).
