Katey Walter Anthony is a Professor at the Water and Environmental Research Center (WERC), University of Alaska Fairbanks, with affiliations to the Institute of Northern Engineering and International Arctic Research Center. Her research focuses on methane dynamics in Arctic and northern lakes, permafrost thaw, and climate change feedbacks, integrating fieldwork with remote sensing and modeling.
- Current positions: Full Professor (2019-present), Research Associate Professor (2013-2019), Research Assistant Professor (2007-2013)
- Education: Ph.D. in Biology and Wildlife (2006), M.Sc. in Restoration Ecology (2000), B.A. in Biogeochemistry (1998)
- Key projects: NASA/NSF-funded methane superseeps monitoring, thermokarst lake carbon cycling, biogas digester efficiency in Alaska
Her recent work includes remote sensing techniques to upscale methane emissions, supported by grants like NASA FINESST and NSF Navigating the New Arctic. She leads the Pan-Arctic Lake-Ice Methane Monitoring Network (PALIMMN) and trains students in Siberian/Alaskan fieldwork.
Scientific awards include:
- Emil Usibelli Distinguished Research Award (2019)
- National Geographic Society Early Explorers Grant (2009)
- UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award (2006)
She has advised numerous Ph.D., M.Sc., and REU students and collaborated with institutions like the Max Planck Institute, Northeast Science Station (Russia), and NOAA. Media coverage includes National Geographic and Nature.
