Kelly Allen is a Lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). She holds a BA in English from Seattle University and pursued doctoral studies in Pastoral Ministry (ABD) at Seattle University’s Institute for Theological Studies. Her work emphasizes writing as a tool for critical citizenship, community engagement, and interdisciplinary learning.
Research interests include creative nonfiction, poetry, and the pedagogical roles of writing across curricula. She advocates for student success through community-based learning, experiential education, and inclusive dialogue. Current projects include manuscripts *“Some of us are dogs on the verge of speaking”* (creative nonfiction essays) and *“Sanctuary”* (poetry).
Teaching roles span the English Department, Sweetland Writing Center, Honors Program, and the Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP), where she focuses on writing and race/ethnicity courses. She also coordinates Great Books courses and leads the New England Literature Program’s experiential education initiatives.
Outside academia, Allen volunteers in tutoring, mentoring, and developing community-focused workshops to bridge academic and public spheres.
