Scott Beal is a Lecturer at the University of Michigan's Sweetland Center for Writing within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. He has taught at Sweetland since 2012 and currently directs the Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts (LSWA), an interdisciplinary living-learning community integrating writing and arts education.
Education:
- B.A., University of Michigan, 1994
- M.F.A., University of Michigan, 1996
Beal's creative and pedagogical work centers on poetry, writing, and the arts, with research interests spanning surrealism, fantasy worldbuilding, race and ethnicity, and gender. His innovative courses—including 'Poetry and Justice,' 'Fantasy Worldbuilding,' and 'The Rhetoric of Online Dating'—explore how writing intersects with social issues, identity, and digital culture through experiential learning.
His publications reflect a surrealist approach to contemporary American poetry, examining everyday life through lenses of social commentary, nature symbolism, and experimental forms. Both works demonstrate thematic continuity in exploring race, gender, and justice within poetic frameworks.
Beal's accolades highlight exceptional contributions to poetry and teaching:
- Finalist, Best of the Net (2022)
- Inducted into Charles Crupi Memorial Society for Teaching Poetry Excellence (2019)
- 2017 Helen Zell Writing Fellowship for Vermont Studio Center Residency
- 2014 Pushcart Prize
- Multiple Hopwood Awards from University of Michigan (1992-1996)
- Winner of 2015 Gertrude Press Poetry Chapbook Competition
As LSWA Director, Beal mentors undergraduate scholars through living-learning programs and develops community-engaged curricula, including a Fall 2025 course connecting writing with local Ypsilanti initiatives. His Helen Zell Fellowship directly supported artistic development through residency opportunities.
He leads the Lloyd Scholars community while maintaining an active creative practice, performing original songs at Ypsi Alehouse and advancing Sweetland's mission through interdisciplinary writing pedagogy.
