Dr. Jane Beal is a tenured full Professor of English Literature at the University of La Verne's College of Arts and Sciences. She previously served as Chair of the English Department and has taught at Wheaton College, Colorado Christian University, and UC Davis. Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. from UC Davis with specializations in medieval and early modern literature, an MFA in Creative Writing, and certificates in Midwifery and Narrative Medicine. She has also practiced midwifery internationally in Uganda and the Philippines.
Her research focuses on medieval poetry (especially the Pearl-poet and Ranulf Higden's Polychronicon), J.R.R. Tolkien's literary mythopoeia, and the intersection of literature with cultural and medical humanities. She has authored/edited eight academic books and over 40 peer-reviewed articles, alongside creative works including poetry collections like Sanctuary and Song of the Selkie. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges literary analysis with creative writing and narrative medicine.
Dr. Beal's scholarly contributions include special issues on Tolkien and medieval poets, conferences dedicating to Richard C. West's legacy, and explorations of medieval bestiaries and climate narratives. She actively engages in teaching strategies for medieval literature and creative writing pedagogy, emphasizing holistic student development.
