Peter Grybauskas is a Principal Lecturer in the English Department at the University of Maryland's College of Arts and Humanities. His research focuses on Medieval literature, mythology, and the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. He has authored books such as A Sense of Tales Untold: Exploring the Edges of Tolkien's Literary Canvas (2021) and edited J.R.R. Tolkien's The Battle of Maldon (2023). Grybauskas teaches courses on fantasy literature and food studies, both domestically and abroad in Italy and the United Kingdom.
His scholarly work bridges Tolkien studies with medieval themes, exploring intertextuality in Old English poetry, the psychological dimensions of characters like Gollum, and the intersection of war narratives across historical and fictional contexts. His publications analyze Tolkien's use of mythological frameworks, narrative gaps, and dialogic structures in works like The Lord of the Rings and The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth.
Grybauskas has contributed to anthologies such as A Wilderness of Dragons: Essays in Honor of Verlyn Flieger (2018), where he examined pastoral imagery in Tolkien's Shire. His research also delves into the influence of World War I on literary portrayals of conflict, particularly in fantasy contexts.
