Keith P. West, Jr. is the George G. Graham Professor of Infant and Child Nutrition at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with primary affiliation in the Department of International Health. He also holds appointments at the Center for Human Nutrition, Dana Center for Preventive Ophthalmology, and Center for Global Health. His research focuses on improving the health and survival of infants, children, adolescents and women in underserved populations through nutritional interventions, with special expertise in micronutrient deficiencies.
Dr. West's research interests center on international health and nutrition, particularly micronutrient deficiencies (vitamins A and E), maternal and child nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, and community-based intervention trials. His work has significantly advanced understanding of how nutritional status affects child survival, infant and child mortality, and maternal health outcomes in resource-limited settings.
His publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to nutritional science, with recent work expanding into plasma proteomics as a platform for nutritional assessment and exploring developmental nutrition exposures on health later in life. The research spans multiple disciplines including nutritional biochemistry, epidemiology, maternal and child health, and global health interventions.
- Kellogg International Nutrition Prize (2007)
- Fellow of the American Society of Nutrition (Class of 2020)
- James Allen Olson Lecture, American Society of Nutrition (2018)
Dr. West has led major international research projects including the Nepal Nutrition Intervention Project-Sarlahi (NNIPS) since 1988 and the JiVitA Project in Bangladesh since 2000. His work has established important evidence for micronutrient interventions in maternal and child health, influencing global nutrition policies and practices. He maintains active research collaborations across South Asia and continues to mentor the next generation of global nutrition researchers.
