Professor Keith George is a Professor of Exercise and Cardiovascular Physiology and serves as Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Exchange) at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). He is a member of the University’s Executive Leadership Team and provides strategic leadership for research, knowledge exchange, and innovation across the institution. His role includes overseeing the development and implementation of LJMU’s Research and Enterprise Strategy, leading submissions to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF), and enhancing the university’s international research profile.

Professor George’s research focuses on the impact of acute and chronic exercise on the heart and circulatory system, particularly in elite athletes, sedentary individuals, and those with chronic disease. His work integrates the development and application of novel imaging technologies in both research and clinical settings. He has a specific interest in cardiac structure, function, and biomarkers of cellular damage during prolonged and ultra-endurance athletic events. His research has been widely published with over 280 peer-reviewed journal articles.
He has held leadership roles including Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science and Head of the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at LJMU. He has supervised over 30 PhD students to completion and has reviewed for high-impact journals and international grant funding bodies. He is an editorial board member for journals such as the European Journal of Applied Physiology, Physiological Therapeutics in Sport, and the Journal of Applied Physiology.
Professor George supports the Active Wellbeing Initiative, an IOC-sponsored network for Global Active Cities. His leadership philosophy centers on respect, trust, perspective, and reflection, aiming to support and challenge individuals and teams to achieve their full academic potential.
He represents LJMU at national and international events and is actively engaged in professional networks to influence research policy and enhance knowledge exchange. His strategic initiatives include strengthening research infrastructure, promoting innovation, and expanding international collaborations in the post-Brexit environment.
