Keith Bower

Dr. Keith Bower is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester. His research focuses on cloud microphysics and chemistry, aerosol interactions, and climate-related phenomena such as mixed-phase clouds and ice production mechanisms. He contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and environmental protection.

Education:

• PhD in Atmospheric Physics from University of Manchester (1989)

Research Interests:

Dr. Bower’s work explores cloud-aerosol interactions, aerosol composition evolution, and the role of ice crystals in atmospheric processes. His studies often involve field measurements in extreme environments (e.g., Arctic regions, Labrador Sea) and advanced techniques like aerosol mass spectrometry to analyze particulate matter. Recent projects include the Deep Convective Microphysics Experiment (DCMEX) and analyses of marine cloud glaciation pathways.

Key Contributions:

• Co-Investigator on the Diabatic Influences on Mesoscale Structures in Extratropical Storms project (2010–2015)
• Contributed to the UK’s response to the 2010 volcanic ash crisis through atmospheric measurements
• Authored/co-authored over 250 publications, including peer-reviewed articles and conference contributions on cloud physics and environmental impacts
