Prof. Kees Boersma is a Full Professor of Innovations in Crisis Management and Societal Resilience at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, part-time seconded to the Faculty of Science. He co-founded the Crisis Resilience Academy and serves on the steering committee of KUNO (Humanitarian Knowledge Exchange). His research focuses on crisis governance, societal resilience, and Science and Technology Studies (STS), with global fieldwork in Nepal, the Philippines, Malawi, and beyond. He holds teaching certifications (BKO/SKO) and supervises PhD candidates. Awards include the 2018 Best PhD Supervisor Award and Distinguished Service Award from ISCRAM.
Teaching spans organizational theory, crisis governance, and innovation management at BSc/MSc/PhD levels. Key grants include EU Horizon grants (e.g., LINKS, SYNERGIES) and projects on nuclear crisis management (GUARDIANS). His work addresses UN SDGs related to resilient infrastructure and sustainable cities.
Recent articles (e.g., 2025's 'Disaster Resilient Societies' and 'Malawi Flood Risk') highlight competency building and media framing.
