Prof. Duncan Shaw is Professor of Operational Research and Critical Systems at the University of Manchester's Alliance Manchester Business School. He holds an honorary professorship at the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI). Previously, he held professorial roles at Warwick Business School and Aston Business School, with earlier academic positions as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at Aston University. His research focuses on societal resilience, disaster management, emergency response systems, and policy implementation.
Shaw leads major initiatives such as the ESRC-funded Recovery, Renewal, Resilience project addressing global post-pandemic recovery strategies. He co-founded the National Consortium for Societal Resilience (UK+), covering 97% of UK local government. His work has attracted over £15.2m in funding, including projects on nuclear waste management, flood resilience, and ISO standard development.
He chairs ISO working groups on community resilience and mass evacuation, contributing to international standards like ISO22315 and ISO22319. Awards include the British Standards Institute’s Standards Maker Award (2020) and a 2018 Newton Prize. Shaw advises governments and organizations worldwide on safety, security, and resilience, with over 100 strategic workshops conducted for entities like NATO, UN agencies, and emergency services.
