Dr. Kayo Kondo is a Lecturer in Japanese Studies at Durham University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures. She specializes in applied linguistics, focusing on health communication and medical discourse analysis. Her roles include coordinating the Year Abroad program and teaching Japanese language courses alongside critical methods in Japanese literature and history. She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of East Anglia and has prior experience at the University of Sheffield and Newcastle University.
Her research explores patient narratives, media representations of disability, and clinical empathy in healthcare settings. Methodologically, she employs discourse analysis, ethnography, and qualitative interviews. Key publications include Patient-centred Communication: Discourse of In-home Medical Consultations for Older Adults (2022) and co-edited volumes on pandemic discourse (2022).
Recent work examines pandemic communication strategies, cross-cultural validation of medical assessment tools, and telemedicine dynamics during crises. Her research bridges applied linguistics with medical humanities, emphasizing inclusive language practices in healthcare and education.
