Kayla Parker is a Lecturer in Media Arts at the University of Plymouth, working part-time (0.5 post) in the School of Art, Design and Architecture within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business. Her practice-based research integrates avant-garde film-making with posthuman feminist theory, focusing on the interplay between bodies, liminal spaces, and ecological memory. Collaborating with sound artist Dr Stuart Moore, she explores environmental themes at the intersection of post-industrial landscapes and climate emergency. Her experimental works, exhibited globally, address colonial history, digital mediation, and the materiality of waterways.
Key contributions include investigations into British post-colonial impacts in Cyprus and the representation of traumatic memory through film. Parker’s avant-garde style has been recognized in academic critiques by scholars such as O'Pray, Rees, and Bendazzi. She supervises PhD artist-researchers and chairs the School of Art, Design and Architecture’s Ethics and Integrity Committee. Her pedagogical focus includes coordinating the Early Career Researcher Network and promoting ethical, dialogic methodologies in creative practice.
Parker’s works are held in major archives like the BFI National Archive and have received commissions from the BBC, Arts Council, and Channel 4. Her research degrees supervision spans 10 awarded theses, covering topics from lens-less imaging technologies to self-injury narratives and posthuman encounters with nature.
