Dr Kaya Barry is a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University's School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science, affiliated with the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research. She holds a PhD from Deakin University and prior roles including Associate Professor at Aalborg University (2021-2022) and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Griffith (2018-2021). Her research focuses on migration, climate impacts, and visual arts-based methodologies, particularly seasonal farm workers in Australia.
Her landmark project Momentarily Immobile (ARC DECRA, 2022–2025) explores temporary migrant labor in Queensland horticulture, yielding policy impacts and exhibitions like Seasonal (touring since 2024). Key grants include $479k DECRA funding and internal Griffith grants on migrant belongings and creative responses to migration.
Research themes include mobility justice, climate adaptation, and artistic engagement. Her work intersects with Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Health) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Notable outputs include over 60 publications, international exhibitions, and policy consultations with governments and NGOs. Awards include the University Medal (2007) and Creative Arts Medal (2006).
Current supervision includes doctoral projects on migration in the Anthropocene and gender dynamics in student mobility. She advises on projects like Emergency Mobilities in the Climate Crisis (2023–2024) and collaborates internationally on art-science initiatives.
