Professor Kay Ohlendieck holds the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, within the Faculty of Science & Engineering. His academic journey includes a Diplom in Biology (M.Sc.) from the University of Konstanz (1980-1985) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University College Cork (1985-1989). He has held various roles, including postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Iowa and State University of New York, before transitioning to academic positions at University College Dublin and his current role since 2002. In 2011, he was awarded a D.Sc. for his published work.
His research focuses on proteomic analysis of skeletal muscle, particularly in aging and dystrophic conditions. Key areas include calcium handling, membrane proteins, and the pathophysiology of muscular dystrophy. His work employs advanced techniques like two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and proteomic profiling to identify biomarkers and understand disease mechanisms.
- Education:
- Diplom in Biology (M.Sc.), University of Konstanz, Germany
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, University College Cork
- D.Sc. (2011), National University of Ireland
Recent publications highlight his work on muscular dystrophy biomarkers, aging skeletal muscle proteomics, and calcium-regulated proteins in muscle disorders. His research spans from basic biochemical analysis to clinical applications, emphasizing translational outcomes. Collaborations include studies on diabetic muscle weakness and the role of chaperones in muscle pathology.
Labs and affiliations include the Human Health Institute, where he leads proteomic initiatives to address muscle-related diseases. His work bridges biochemistry, molecular biology, and clinical science to advance understanding of muscle disorders and aging processes.
