Kavian Cooke

Dr. Kavian Cooke is an Associate Professor in Material Science and Engineering and Director of Postgraduate Research at the University of Bradford's Faculty of Engineering and Digital Technologies. His career spans roles at the University of Technology, Jamaica, and the University of Calgary, where he earned his PhD in Engineering under Professor Tahir Khan. His research focuses on surface engineering, tribology, and advanced materials for aerospace and industrial applications, emphasizing collaboration with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to drive innovation.

Education: BEng (University of Technology, Jamaica), MSc in Tribology (scholarship-funded), PhD in Engineering (University of Calgary).

Research Interests: Diffusion bonding, nanocomposite coatings, additive manufacturing, wear/corrosion resistance, and sustainable materials. Notable projects include the SIBLING initiative (acquiring a JEOL SEM) and development of electroplated coatings for aluminum alloys. Current projects include the Fab2Paper initiative (recycling textiles into paper) and medical device materials via the Brad-Attain PhD Studentship.

Awards: 2013 University of Technology Award for Excellence in Research.

Advising & Grants: Leads postgraduate research programs, collaborates with Pharmacy and Computer Science departments, and engages SMEs through initiatives like Industry 4.0 integration. Former Head of Mechanical Engineering at University of Technology, Jamaica.

Labs/Teams: Active in Tahir Khan’s research group, advancing materials for aerospace and biomedical applications via diffusion bonding and nanotechnology.
