Dr. Katy Wright is an Associate Professor of Sociology & Social Policy at the School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds, within the Faculty of Social Sciences. She has been a member of the school since 2012, initially serving as a Research Associate in CIRCLE and later as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Bauman Institute before being appointed to her current lectureship in 2017.
Her research focuses on community resilience, climate change, citizen participation, risk, vulnerability, and societal transformations. She is particularly interested in how individuals and communities conceptualize and respond to adversity, with a sociologically informed critique of resilience as a policy concept. Her work is highly interdisciplinary, involving collaborations across the arts, humanities, and natural sciences, both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Wright is co-lead of the Horizons Institute’s ‘Remaking Places’ interdisciplinary research network, which brings together academics, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and activists to drive transformative change. She also contributes to the Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme on Extinction Studies, where she supervises students and leads the Digital Resources working group. Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate modules, with a focus on the sociological and social policy dimensions of environmental issues and research methods.
She has extensive experience partnering with local authorities, voluntary organizations, government departments, and private sector entities, often developing applied research opportunities for students. Dr. Wright welcomes PhD applicants interested in resilience, adaptation, transformation, and related themes, particularly those pursuing interdisciplinary projects with colleagues in Geography, Transport Studies, Earth & Environment, and Religious Studies.
