Katy Wheeler is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Essex and Deputy Director of the Centre for Environment and Society. She leads the £2.2 million Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme on Sustainable Transitions and holds roles such as Sustainability Officer and former Director of Education in her department. Her academic support hours are available via Zoom by appointment.
She earned a PhD in Sociology (2010), MA in Sociological Research Methods (2006), and BA in Sociology and Criminology (2004), all from the University of Essex. Her research focuses on sustainable consumption, exploring how young people navigate moral and systemic responsibilities in sustainability and climate action. She examines fair trade, recycling, circular economies, and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), emphasizing tensions between individual behavior and systemic change.
Publications include books such as Fair Trade and the Citizen-Consumer: Shopping for Justice? (2012) and Household Recycling and Consumption Work (2015), alongside articles in Sustainability and Journal of Moral Education. She is a leading qualitative methods researcher, specializing in MAXQDA software and teaching internationally at the Essex Summer School.

Her work extends to methodological innovation, advocating for technological reflexivity in qualitative research with Generative AI. Her consultancy includes analyzing youth sustainability data for SEEd and SAGE Publications’ pedagogical resources.
