Katy Wells is an Associate Professor in Political Theory at the University of Warwick's Department of Politics and International Studies. Supported by a Leverhulme Research Fellowship, her primary research explores the normative foundations of renting and state sovereignty. She investigates housing justice, state neutrality in personal relationships, and a 'positive' theory of power. Her work bridges ethical theory with practical policy analysis.
Research interests include associational freedom (particularly disassociation rights), friendship ethics, and state obligations toward personal relationships. She critiques traditional ownership models through a lens of limited sovereignty, advocating for ethical frameworks around renting goods and housing access.
Recent presentations address topics like 'Ghosting and Decency' (2025), state neutrality in housing choice (2024), and the ethics of home ownership (2023). Teaching includes modules on justice, democracy, and equality in the 2024-25 academic year.
Her publications span journals such as Political Studies, King's Law Journal, and Political Philosophy in a Pandemic. Key themes include homelessness as freedom deprivation, gentrification's psychological impacts, and pandemic-era housing adequacy.
