Dr. Katy Sian is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of York, with a robust academic career spanning critical race theory, postcolonial studies, and anti-racist praxis. She joined York in 2015 after holding positions at the University of Manchester and conducting postdoctoral research at the Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies (CERS) at the University of Leeds.
- Education: PhD, MA, BA in Sociology from the University of Leeds.
Her research critically examines the intersections of racism, Islamophobia, and colonialism, emphasizing the political dimensions of these structures. Katy leads the Vulnerability & Policing Futures Research Centre project on over-policing of young people of color in Leeds and authored the Anti-Racism Toolkit, which guides methodological and ethical research practices rooted in social justice.
Her publications traverse critical analyses of counter-terrorism policies, postcolonial Sikh identity, and institutional racism in academia. She advocates for decolonizing research methodologies and fostering interfaith dialogue.
