Dr. Katrina Binger is a Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry and Genetics at Monash University's School of Translational Medicine. She completed her PhD in protein chemistry and biophysics (2009) and transitioned to chronic disease research through postdoctoral work in Germany, where she conducted groundbreaking studies on dietary salt's impact on immune homeostasis.
- Established independent multidisciplinary research program on immunometabolism since 2012
- Expertise in cellular metabolism assays (Seahorse Flux, GC/LC-MS), animal disease models, and 3D cell cultures
Her research integrates immunology with metabolic pathway analysis, addressing clinical relevance in diabetes, hypertension, infection, and inflammation. Key findings include demonstrating high-salt diets' dual effects on macrophage polarization, with implications for chronic disease progression.
Scientific contributions include:
- NHMRC CJ Martin Fellowship awardee (2012)
- 13 peer-reviewed publications including Cell Reports, Immunity, and JCI
- Collaborations spanning Germany, Australia, and international institutions
