Professor Katrin Rehdanz is a leading academic in environmental economics at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, holding the Chair of Environmental and Resource Economics and serving as Director of the Institute for Environmental, Resource and Regional Economics since 2016. She is also a Principal Investigator at the Kiel Centre for Globalization and a DIW Fellow associated with the German Socio-Economic Panel study.
Dr. Rehdanz studied economics at the University of Hamburg, completing her doctoral work at the University's Research Center for Sustainable Environmental Development. She joined Kiel University in 2007 as a junior professor for environmental and resource economics and led the "Valuing the Ocean" research group within the "Future Ocean" Cluster of Excellence until 2012.
Her research focuses on quantitative environmental and energy economics using spatially explicit GIS data, with particular expertise in environmental valuation, climate change economics, and energy economics. She is recognized as one of the few economists in Germany specializing in environmental assessment. Her work bridges economic theory with practical environmental policy applications through interdisciplinary approaches that integrate economic analysis with environmental science, psychology, and policy considerations.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent focus on understanding consumer behavior related to energy technologies, the economics of climate engineering, and the drivers of renewable technology adoption in household sectors. Her research demonstrates sophisticated methodological approaches combining economic modeling with empirical survey data.
