Katrin Grammann

Prof. Dr. Katrin Grammann is a faculty member at the Westfälische Hochschule, affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FB 8) and the Westphalian Institute for Health. She serves as the academic advisor for the Sustainable Biological and Chemical Technologies (NBCT) program, contributing to interdisciplinary education in applied biotechnologies.

Her research is centered on molecular microbiology and metabolic engineering, with a focus on rational strain development to optimize microorganisms for producing health-relevant compounds. She leads projects involving heterologous protein expression, flow cytometry for whole-cell catalyst optimization, and metabolite identification using advanced LC-MS systems. Her lab supports high-throughput sequencing (Oxford Nanopore), environmental microbial detection via FISH, and anaerobic cultivation using Hungate techniques, while excluding work with pathogenic organisms (S2).

Dr. Grammann has secured substantial research funding, including €75,000 (FH-Basis 2018) for a flow cytometer and €482,000 (FH-Invest 2020) for a Quadrupole-Time-of-Flight LC-MS system and automated sample preparation, enhancing capabilities in metabolomics and wastewater contaminant analysis.

She is a member of professional societies including Dechema and VAAM, reflecting her engagement with the broader biotechnology and microbiology communities.

In teaching, she oversees courses in microbiology, molecular biology, and metabolic engineering across multiple bachelor's and master's programs, including Molecular Biology, Bioanalytics, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, and Medical Microbiology. Laboratory practicals are integral to her pedagogical approach.
