Katja Sontag is a Teacher-researcher and Lecturer in private law (HDR) at the Faculty of Law and Political Science, Côte d'Azur University. She holds authorization to direct research and is affiliated with the Research Group in Law, Economics, Management (GREDEG, UMR 7321), the Pole Norms, Competition and Regulation (PNCR), and the Team EDEN (Nice School of Economic Law).
Her doctoral research completed in 2003 at the University of French Riviera examined Municipal damage insurance, contractual approach under supervisors Professors L. BOY and M. BAZEX, with a jury including Professor M.-A. FRISON-ROCHE. She has since developed expertise in sports law frameworks, particularly for outdoor and nature sports.
Dr. Sontag's research centers on the legal tensions between public access, environmental protection, and sports practice. Her work critically examines civil liability regimes, coastal path sustainability, and governance models for nature sports. She investigates how public consultation mechanisms can integrate outdoor sports into territorial development while addressing economic imbalances in public service provision. Her scholarship consistently bridges theoretical legal analysis with practical implementation challenges in sports policy.
Recent publications (2021-2022) demonstrate a focused evolution toward reforming nature sports regulation, with particular attention to environmental assessment as a governance tool and liability regime adaptations. Her analysis of the Chastreix-Sancy reference case reveals systematic approaches to balancing ecological protection with recreational access rights.
Within her institutional context, Dr. Sontag actively contributes to multidisciplinary research through GREDEG's economic law initiatives and the PNCR pole. Her work with Team EDEN emphasizes the intersection of legal frameworks, economic regulation, and sports policy development in the Nice metropolitan region.
