Prof. Dr. Katja Nelson is Head of Translational Implantology at the University Medical Center Freiburg and holds the first professorship in this field in Germany. She is affiliated with the Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within the Faculty of Medicine, where she actively contributes to clinical practice, research, and teaching.
Her research interests center on advancing radiation-free imaging in dentistry, particularly through the development and clinical integration of Dental-MRI. She is a strong advocate for interdisciplinary innovation, collaborating with institutions like Fraunhofer IAF to explore quantum magnetometry for high-resolution, low-risk diagnostic applications.
Nelson envisions a future of personalized, partly automated, and radiation-free dentistry. She has published extensively on the use of MRI in dental contexts and is a vocal proponent of bringing Dental-MRI into routine clinical practice. Her work emphasizes the importance of uniting clinicians, basic scientists, and industry experts to translate research into real-world solutions.
She leads initiatives aimed at improving diagnostic precision and patient safety, focusing on technologies that operate at room temperature and are suitable for daily clinical use. Her leadership in translational implantology places her at the forefront of next-generation dental care innovation.
